Smile Confidence Restoration with Lumineers®

Providing a Lifetime of Dentistry that Cares

What are Lumineers®?

Lumineers are thin layers of porcelain that are attached to the front surface of your tooth, in order to improve the color, shape, size, and alignment of your tooth or teeth. After your Lumineers are bonded to your teeth, you will be able to immediately resume your normal diet and will not need to adhere to any additional oral maintenance, although it is important that you continue taking good care of your teeth. With proper care, your Lumineers will last you for years!

At Brook West Family Dentistry, we are committed to providing our patients with the care and support they need. If you are scheduled to have this procedure or have any questions, please contact our staff to see if Lumineers are right for you. We are proud to provide one-of-a-kind personalized care that is tailored to your unique needs.

The Lumineer® Process

After your initial consultation with your dentist, the next step in having your Lumineers placed is taking a dental impression of your upper and lower teeth. Once this impression is finished, it will be sent to a lab, where customized Lumineers will be designed.

At your follow up appointment, which will generally take place a few weeks later, the Lumineer will be tested to make sure the fit is correct. Once a good fit has been determined, your dentist will do some moderate etching to prepare the placement, and then begin bonding. After this process is complete, your dentist will test your bite to ensure that the contacts are balanced and will avoid chipping.

Candidate for Lumineers®

While Lumineers may not be the best choice for every patient, they will likely be a good option if you fall into any of these categories:

  • Patients who have smaller teeth due to acid erosion or genetics
  • Patients whose smile is not proportionate to the size of their lips
  • Patients whose teeth are tapered and somewhat hidden

Benefits of Lumineers®

Dentists will recommend, and patients will request having Lumineers for a variety of reasons. The most common of which is that this procedure preserves your natural teeth, and following the procedure, there is generally no lingering sensitivity.

Other benefits to having Lumineers include the following:

  • Quick and Painless: In addition to being a painless procedure, Lumineers are one of the fastest ways to transform discolored, damaged, or poorly aligned teeth.
  • Minimal Tooth Reduction: In most cases, there is little to no tooth reduction required.
  • Temporary veneers are unnecessary: Lumineers are distinct from porcelain veneers in that patients are not required to wear temporary veneers while the custom veneer is being created.
  • Longevity: Lumineers typically last as long as traditional porcelain veneers.
  • Reversible Procedure: If it is determined that no tooth reduction was necessary, the Lumineers, unlike conventional veneers, are very easy to reverse.

While many people are excellent candidates for Lumineers, there are certain issues that Lumineers cannot fix, including patients who have severely crooked teeth, patients whose teeth are so oversized that even a small increase would negatively impact the proportions, or patients whose bite is poorly aligned, or patients who have a disproportionate facial profile. In these circumstances, making structural corrections is the more important issue to address.

Caring For Your Lumineers®

The most important thing to keep in mind with regards to your Lumineers is that they will not last forever. Even if you take the best care of them possible, they will still need to be replaced at a certain point in time. If you have Lumineers and feel that you are in need of a replacement, please contact our staff.

Beyond that, Lumineers do not require that you make any dramatic changes to your daily eating habits. The most important thing is that you continue to maintain good daily dental hygiene practices. Be sure that you continue brushing and flossing your teeth twice daily and schedule dentist appointments every six months for cleanings and maintenance. Your dentist will also be able to let you know if it is time for a replacement.

Remember: the better you take care of your teeth, the better your teeth will take care of you.

Associated Costs

As is the case with most dental procedures, what and how much of your procedure will be covered will ultimately be determined by your specific insurance plan. If you are not currently covered by an insurance plan, or if you have any questions about payment options, please contact our staff who will be happy to discuss your options with you.
