Providing a Lifetime of Dentistry that Cares

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are the closest replacement to a natural tooth and they are designed to allow patients to complete their smile and begin chewing and biting like they used to. Dental implants also help maintain the integrity of the jawbone, and actively save the jaw from additional bone loss.

Dental implants are a surgically positioned titanium post that is placed beneath the gum line and allows your dentist to set replacement teeth or another fixed prosthesis. a bridge. Dental implants are made from titanium, which is the only metal capable of grafting with human bone.

At Brook West Family Dentistry, we are committed to providing our patients with the care and support they need. If you have any questions, please contact our staff to see if dental implants are right for you.

Implant Process

Dental implants usually require several visits to the office, and potentially a few months to fully address. If your dentist determines that dental implants are your best option in your initial consultation, your dentist will schedule a follow up appointment to determine the area(s) where an implant may be placed, by examining the jawbone to make sure that a tooth implant is a viable option. During this part of the process, the dentist will generally need to take X-rays or some other form of imaging.

After it has been determined that you are a good fit for the procedure, the dentist will install a titanium rod into your jawbone. After this process has been completed, your bone will need some time to heal and finish grafting itself to the titanium rod. This part of the process will differ for each patient, but will take up to a few months.

Once the rod has healed and the grafting process is complete, an abutment will be placed. This abutment effectively holds the crown, which will then be adhered using either a specialty screw or dental cement. Once this part of the process is complete, your new tooth or teeth will finally be in place and the procedure will have concluded.

Implant Care

Following this procedure, it can take a few weeks to finish the healing process. During this time, we recommend eating softer foods, with a gradual build up to harder and more abrasive foods as the sensitivity and discomfort begins to subside.

Once you have fully healed, dramatic changes to your diet and or eating habits will not be necessary to properly maintain your dental implants, though it is important to continue treating your dental implants as you would your natural teeth. Be sure that you maintain good dental hygienic practices by brushing and flossing at least twice daily, and continue scheduling your dentist appointments every six months. If properly cared for, dental implants can last for decades.

Remember: the better you take care of your teeth, the better your teeth will take care of you!

The Benefits of Dental Implants

There are substantial benefits for getting dental implants, but the most significant benefit is that the implant preserves the integrity of the original bone. Additionally, filling gaps prevents other potentially significant issues from developing in the future.

Dental implants also come with the added benefit of easily upgrading your dentures. If you currently have removable dentures, dental implants will allow you to begin securing your dentures to your gums.

From an aesthetic stance, dental implants also improve your overall appearance and can restore a sense of self-confidence. Neglecting to replace missing teeth can cause the shape of your face and jaw to change, and the simple act of replacing even one tooth can have a tremendous impact on your quality of life.

Associated Costs

As is the case with most dental procedures, what and how much of your procedure will be covered will ultimately be determined by your specific insurance plan. Still, many insurance plans cover dental implant procedures, although they may not cover the entire cost of the dental implants. If you are not currently covered by an insurance plan, or if you have any questions about payment options, please contact our staff who will be happy to discuss your options with you.
