Children's Dentistry Expectations

Many parents struggle with the question of when they should take their child to the dentist for the first time. Most dental professionals agree that the proper time to bring your child in for their first visit is around the time of their third birthday. If your child is demonstrating any pain or discomfort, however, you should bring them in for a checkup to make sure that their teeth are growing appropriately.

During your child’s first visit, our number one priority is making sure your child is comfortable. Our staff has been trained in reducing your child’s anxiety through games and evoking laughter, which have proven results in reducing stress. Once your child feels comfortable, we will evaluate the development of their mouth.

During this part of the process, we may also walk you through helpful home care tips that will prepare you for what you can do as your child begins to grow new teeth. If necessary, this may also be an opportunity for us to inform you about any potential habits that may be negatively affecting your child’s oral health. The most important lesson we can teach parents is that the best dentistry begins at home!

Once we have evaluated your child’s gums, the soft tissue, their bite and dental growth, and checked for any risk of decay or bacteria, we will, if necessary, take X-rays to see if there are any issues occurring that cannot be seen otherwise. If your child is old enough and your dentist deems it necessary, they may decide to clean your child’s teeth, and or perform a soft cleaning of their tongue and cheeks.

If your child is older still, the pediatric dentist will spend some time talking to your child about the importance of making healthy food choices and how doing so can create strong and healthy teeth. We will also coach your child on proper brushing and flossing techniques.

Preparing Your Child

It is no secret that many children experience stress or anxiety when they begin visiting the dentist. While our staff is well trained in addressing and alleviating these concerns, there are some important things parents can do to help proactively address and diminish some of these concerns that can arise.

One tip that is helpful is waiting until the day of the appointment to let your child know they will be going to the dentist. This can be a wonderful opportunity to present appointments as “adventures!”

We also recommend having your child bring their favorite toy or blanket, in case they do become anxious while they are there. We will toys available at our clinic, but nothing can compete with a child’s favorite toy!

Creating Good Habits

One of the most important services we can provide is helping your children grow into healthy adults. If left unchecked, tooth decay can begin at a very young age. The good news is that with proper care and maintenance, this issue can be avoided. Because children are constantly growing and developing, they will face unique challenges. We are here to help you develop a specialized preventative plan that will set them up for success in the future.

Associated Costs

As is the case with most dental procedures, what and how much of your child’s procedure will be covered will ultimately be determined by your specific insurance plan, but most health insurers are willing to insure any child younger than 12. If you are not currently covered by an insurance plan, or if you have any questions about payment options, please contact our staff who will be happy to discuss your options with you.
