Beautiful Metal Free Dental Crowns

Providing a Lifetime of Dentistry that Cares

What are Metal Free Dental Crowns?

When the area on a tooth’s surface becomes damaged, a dental crown may be used to fill that gap. This tooth-shaped gap not only protects the structure of the teeth that remain, but will also improve your ability to bite and chew. It will also improve your overall oral hygiene.

Crowns can be made from a wide variety of materials, and while metal has been the standard for many years, as technology has continued to improve, metal-free crowns and bridges have become increasingly popular. Patients who opt for metal free crowns generally do so because this style of crown looks natural and prevents dark lines from forming around the outer aspects of your tooth where the gum meets the tooth.

If you have been experiencing issues with decay, fractures, broken or cracked teeth, or other related issues, and if you are interested in having a natural looking solution, metal free dental crowns may be the right option for you. At Brook West Family Dentistry, we are committed to providing our patients with the care and support they need. Please contact our staff to see if metal free dental crowns are right for you.

We are proud to provide one of a kind personalized care that is tailored to your unique needs!

Why Get a Dental Crown

Your dentist may suggest a metal free dental crown for a variety of reasons, but there are generally two primary cases where a dental crown will be placed: either for aesthetic or for functional purposes. The aesthetic benefits of having metal free dental crowns placed are that they will straighten crooked teeth, cover stained teeth, and that they look natural. The most common practical and functional reason for having metal free dental crowns placed is that they improve teeth that are weakened and can replace damaged individual teeth.

The Process

The process for having crowns placed begins with our staff taking an X-ray of the areas in question, so they can determine the extent of damage that has occurred. If the gums and roots are in stable condition, the dentist will remove the areas of decay. Following this, they will begin reshaping the area. Next, your dentist will make an impression of the tooth or teeth.

While this is happening, we may place a temporary crown to protect the area from damage. Once the crown is complete, a follow up appointment will be scheduled, where we will remove the temporary crown and replace it with the permanent one. When the shape and color are finalized, your dentist will cement the crown into place, and your procedure will be complete!

Benefits of Metal Free Dental Crowns

Metal Free Dental Crowns come with the following benefits:

  • Long-Term Solution: Metal Free Crowns are generally stronger
  • A More Natural Look and Feel: Metal-free crowns are made from a variety of different materials, such as: porcelain, ceramic, quartz, glass, or resin, all of which have a bit of translucence, which more closely resembles your natural teeth
  • Cost: Metal-free crowns generally cost less than veneers
  • Reduced Sensitivity: Patients who get metal free crowns often experience less pain from hot or cold beverages

Dental Crown Aftercare

Your teeth or gums may be extra sensitive following this procedure. This pain can easily be managed with over-the counter pain relievers. We can also provide you with specially formulated rinses and pastes that will work to ease your discomfort. It is very important to practice good daily oral hygiene to prevent decay and bacterial infections. Much like the tooth it is replicating, the crown is at risk of chipping, fracturing, or cracking when eating or chewing on hard foods.

Aside from that, there are no specific restrictions to follow to maintain your metal free dental crowns, though it is important to continue treating your crowns as you would your natural teeth. Be sure that you maintain good dental hygienic practices by brushing and flossing at least twice daily to keep them in impeccable shape, and continue scheduling your regular dental hygiene appointments.

Remember: the better you take care of your teeth, the better your teeth will take care of you!

Associated Costs

As is the case with most dental procedures, what and how much of your procedure will be covered will ultimately be determined by your specific insurance plan. Still, many insurance plans cover metal free dental crown procedures, although they may not cover the entire cost. If you are not currently covered by an insurance plan, or if you have any questions about payment options, please contact our staff, who will be happy to discuss your options with you.
