Can Invisalign Fix Midline Misalignment

Midline misalignment means that the space between your two center teeth on the top and bottom do not match up and can cause several problems aside from aesthetics. Other factors that can be affected include bite issues, speech problems, and TMJ disorders.

Misaligned teeth can have a negative impact on both your oral health and self-esteem. Orthodontic treatment is a great way to correct midline misalignment, using either traditional braces or clear aligners such as Invisalign.

Can Invisalign fix midline misalignment?

Invisalign clear aligner therapy is a great way to correct midline misalignment. The aligners are a series of clear plastic trays that fit over the entire surface of your teeth. Each aligner works to progressively and gradually shift your teeth into alignment. Each set of trays is worn for about two weeks for at least 20 hours per day. With each new set, the fit is a little tighter until the desired results are achieved and then final retainers are provided which will keep your newly aligned teeth from shifting.

What is the process for Invisalign?

To begin, your dentist will need to evaluate your mouth to see if you are a candidate. If it is decided that Invisalign is a good option for you, they will take x-rays and a digital scan of your teeth for the Invisalign lab to create a digital progression video so you will be able to see how your teeth are going to move before you begin treatment.

Once you approve your treatment plan, the lab will create your aligner trays. When you receive your first set, your dentist will have you come into the office to make sure that they fit. You will be instructed to wear each set of trays for 20-22 hours per day, removing them only to eat. As you progress through each set of trays, you will see your teeth gradually shift to their new, aligned position.

Your dentist will track your progress with periodic checks to make sure that no modifications need to be made. Once you have finished your initial set of trays, there may be an additional series of trays for refinement, though not everyone needs that final step. After all trays are complete, you will receive retainers to sleep in to keep your teeth stable and in alignment.

Invisalign vs Traditional Braces

The biggest advantage that Invisalign offers is the comfort and discretion of treatment. Metal braces often cause sores on the inside of the mouth where the brackets rub against the cheek and can be very uncomfortable. Oral hygiene with braces can be a bit challenging but since they are removable, Invisalign trays are much easier to care for and make it easy to brush and floss. Invisalign is also a much faster process in comparison to traditional braces for orthodontic treatment.

Midline misalignment is a common problem that is easily corrected with Invisalign. If you are hoping to get orthodontic treatment, ask your dentist about Invisalign. Your dentist may be a preferred provider for Invisalign but if they are not, they will be able to refer you to an orthodontist who can provide excellent care.
