Holistic Dentistry

Holistic dentistry involves a dentist considering your health in its entirety when planning your oral health treatments. This approach to total body wellness involves the use of safe materials, minimally invasive care, and sometimes alternative treatments.

With all of that said, most dentists will consider your overall health and wellness when providing services.

Below are some of the services you can expect from a general dentist, along with what you can expect during a visit to your general dentist’s office.

General Dentistry Services

There are a variety of services your general dentist may perform. Some of the most common include:

  1. Dental Cleaning: A professional dental cleaning is a standard service that general dentists provide. This includes the use of specialized tools to remove plaque, tartar, and debris. The dentist will often polish the teeth afterward, leaving the patient’s teeth and gums looking and feeling fresh.
  2. Examination: An examination is also expected during a routine cleaning and checkup. Your dentist will take a look at your teeth, gums, and overall oral cavity to ensure the health of your teeth, gums, jawbone, and more. Your dentist may recommend X-rays during this process, especially if they haven’t been performed recently. Examinations are often performed every six months, but they may be more frequent depending on the needs of the patient.
  3. Fillings: Cavities are a common ailment, and most general dentists provide cavity treatment services. This includes the placement of dental fillings (after the cavity has been cleaned). Your dentist will work with you to pick the right material to meet your needs. Once your filling is placed, you can continue to eat as you did previously.
  4. Extractions: Outside of wisdom teeth extraction, tooth extractions are rare. With that said, your dentist may recommend extraction if a tooth has become decayed or damaged to the point that it can no longer be saved.

Ongoing Care

In order to ensure a quick and comfortable visit to the dentist for a cleaning and checkup, you’ll want to make sure to take care of your oral health. This means both visiting your dentist every six months or so for a cleaning and checkup, brushing your teeth twice a day, and flossing and rinsing daily. As mentioned before, your dentist will let you know if a more frequent visit is necessary. This can be the case if a procedure was recently performed that requires more comprehensive maintenance.
