Types of Fillings Available
Because every patient has different needs, there is no one perfect fit for every patient. The proper filling for you will be determined by factors such as whether or not you have allergies to any of the materials, where the filling needs to be placed take place, and the extent of the repair required, or the cost of the procedure. Still, there are helpful things to know about each type of material when considering which option is best for you.
- Composite (plastic) resins: One of the biggest benefits of this type of filling is that it can match the color of your natural teeth, which makes it difficult to tell that any work has been done. Another benefit is that because the resin is bonded to the tooth, more natural tooth structure can be preserved.
- Porcelain inlays or onlays fillings: These types of fillings, which are called inlays or onlays, come with the benefit of matching the color of your natural tooth and being resistant to permanent staining.
- Gold inlays or onlays fillings: One of the biggest benefits of gold inlays is that gum tissues tend to tolerate them better, and because they last a long time. Because of their longevity and natural interaction with gum tissues, this is considered by many to be the optimal restorative filling material.
