Composite Dental Bonding

Providing a Lifetime of Dentistry that Cares

What is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding is performed on patients experiencing chipped or cracked teeth, exposed roots, spaces between their teeth, or general decay. The bonding material, or composite, is both strong and designed to look and feel like your real teeth.

The most common reasons for patients to have a dental bonding procedure include the following:

  • Changing the shape of a tooth
  • Covering up discoloration
  • Repairing decayed teeth
  • Repairing cracks or chips in teeth
  • Filling a small space between teeth
  • Protecting the root of a tooth

If you have been experiencing any of these issues, you may want to consider setting up an appointment for dental bonding today. If you currently have chips or cracks, it is important that you schedule this appointment, because the longer these chips and cracks remain untreated, the greater the likelihood that decay and additional damage will occur. When this type of damage and decay is left untreated long enough, more invasive procedures may become necessary.

Dental Bonding Process

The first step in the dental bonding process involves cleaning and then drying the tooth that is in need of repair. Once your dentist has applied the appropriate cleansers, your tooth will be ready for the bonding resin to be placed, which will allow for the tooth bonding to become attached to the existing surface. This resin is comprised of several different adhesives as well as other components, and will be applied until the desired thickness has been reached.

In case you are concerned, please know that this resin compound can be colored in a way that matches your natural teeth, so much so that many people will not even be able to tell that it has been applied. When the resin has been set, the new tooth will be cleaned, polished, and adjusted to fit your natural bite and smile. This procedure varies in length, depending upon the number of teeth and surfaces involved.

Bonding Vs Veneers

Dental bonding and veneers are essentially two different approaches that yield very similar results. Dental bonding is ultimately just a simplified version of veneers. The process is faster, less invasive, and more affordable than veneers.

Veneers, which are sometimes referred to as “Instant Orthodontics,” have a dramatic and immediate effect on improving your smile. The veneers correct discolored teeth, chips and stains, and can address teeth that are an unwanted size or that are crooked. Veneers are thin, custom made porcelain that is designed to match the color of your natural teeth. They also cover the front surface of the tooth, which immediately improves the overall appearance.

The Benefits of Dental Bonding

The clearest benefit of having bonding applied is that it instantly improves your smile. It is normal for people to feel self-conscious when they have cracked or chipped teeth, but having this simple procedure done can have a dramatic impact on increasing a person’s confidence and sense of self-worth. Best of all, this procedure can usually be completed in just one visit to the dentist!

Dental Bonding Aftercare

Dramatic changes to your diet and or eating habits will not be necessary to properly maintain your dental bonding, and there are no specific restrictions to follow to maintain your dental bonding, though it is important to continue practicing good dental hygienic practices by brushing and flossing at least twice daily continue scheduling your dentist appointments every six months.

Remember: the better you take care of your teeth, the better your teeth will take care of you!

Associated Costs

As is the case with most dental procedures, what and how much of your procedure will be covered will ultimately be determined by your specific insurance plan. Still, many insurance plans cover dental bonding procedures, although they may not cover the entire cost of the dental bonding. If you are not currently covered by an insurance plan, or if you have any questions about payment options, please contact our staff who will be happy to discuss your options with you.
