What are Full or Partial Dentures?

The loss of teeth can happen for a variety of reasons. Whether it be due to poor oral health, an accident, or simply aging, patients may find themselves with a large portion (or all) of their teeth missing. One of the most common replacement options when a large portion of the teeth is missing is full or partial dentures.

Dentures offer a convenient and attractive replacement for those with a large number of missing teeth. This option is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, allowing patients to bite, chew, and smile again. They can also be made to resemble a patient’s natural teeth and smile, fitting seamlessly with surrounding teeth.

Denture Expectations

Getting fitted for dentures is a multi-step process. At your initial consultation, your dentist will examine the surrounding teeth and/or jawbone to determine their overall health and decide whether full or partial dentures are the best option for you. After this is determined, the next step is taking dental impressions of the remaining teeth and gums in order to have appliances created that are specifically designed to fit your particular mouth. If any teeth need to be extracted, you will have to wait for the gums to heal before an impression can be made.

Once these steps are completed, your dentist will discuss customizable options, which include the size, shade, and shape of the teeth. If you would prefer that your dentures match your original teeth, it would be helpful to bring in a picture for your dentist.

Once all of the necessary information has been collected, it will be sent to a lab, which will design the dentures. Once these designs are complete, your dentist will set up a trial fitting, and after determining that the fit is correct, the process will be complete.

More on Partial Dentures

Unlike full dentures, upper and lower partial dentures are designed to only fill in a gap that is created by missing teeth. Removable partial dentures generally consist of replacement teeth that are fixed to an acrylic base, which has been shaded to match the natural color of your teeth and gums. An added benefit is that your partial dentures will often have a clasp that can attach to your natural teeth, which will hold the denture in place.

At first, it may feel a bit odd putting in and taking out the removable denture, but people generally get used to this feeling over time. During this period of getting used to your new dentures, it is important to never force the denture into place by biting down on it, as doing so can break or bend the clasps. It is also important not to wear your dentures 24 hours a day.

The Benefits of Dentures

Full or partial dentures have many benefits beyond the obvious aesthetic improvement to your smile. One of the most noticeable improvements is that you will be better able to chew your food, and will also speak more clearly. Another benefit is that dentures are not surgically adhered, so there is very little discomfort experienced while wearing them. Dentures also support cheeks and lips, which prevents the face from sagging. Finally, dentures are long-lasting, only needing to be replaced every five to ten years, which makes them an incredibly affordable and efficient way to improve your smile and overall health.

Caring for your Dentures

Even though dentures are not real teeth, it is still important to take proper care of them. Be sure to keep your dentures clean. It is also important to take good care of your gums and the remaining teeth you have. Aside from that, there are no specific restrictions to follow, though it is important to continue practicing good dental hygiene by brushing and flossing at least twice daily and to continue scheduling your regular dental hygiene appointments.

Remember: the better you take care of your teeth, the better your teeth will take care of you!

As is the case with most dental procedures, what and how much of your procedure will be covered will ultimately be determined by your specific insurance plan. Still, many insurance plans cover full and partial denture procedures, although they may not cover the entire cost of the full and partial dentures.
