Why Get a Dental Crown

Your dentist may suggest a metal-free dental crown for a variety of reasons, but there are generally two primary cases where a dental crown will be placed: either for aesthetic or functional purposes. The aesthetic benefits of having metal-free dental crowns placed are that they will straighten crooked teeth, cover stained teeth, and that they look natural. The most common practical and functional reason for having metal-free dental crowns placed is that they improve teeth that are weakened and can replace damaged individual teeth.

The Process

The process for having crowns placed begins with our staff taking an X-ray of the areas in question, so they can determine the extent of damage that has occurred. If the gums and roots are in stable condition, the dentist will remove the areas of decay. Following this, they will begin reshaping the area. Next, your dentist will make an impression of the tooth or teeth.

While this is happening, we may place a temporary crown to protect the area from damage. Once the crown is complete, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled, where we will remove the temporary crown and replace it with the permanent one. When the shape and color are finalized, your dentist will cement the crown into place, and your procedure will be complete!

Aside from that, there are no specific restrictions to follow to maintain your metal-free dental crowns, though it is important to continue treating your crowns as you would your natural teeth. Be sure that you maintain good dental hygiene practices by brushing and flossing at least twice daily to keep them in impeccable shape, and continue scheduling your regular dental hygiene appointments.
