Smile Confidently with Porcelain Veneers

Providing a Lifetime of Dentistry that Cares

What are Porcelain Veneers?

Many people refer to porcelain veneers as “Instant Orthodontics” because they make such a dramatic and immediate improvement to your smile. Veneers are used to address issues like stains, chips, and discolored teeth, and can also improve a crooked tooth or teeth that are at an unwanted length or size. The actual veneers are incredibly thin, custom made shells that are designed to match the specific color of your teeth and cover the front surface of the selected tooth or teeth, thereby improving their general appearance.

At Brook West Family Dentistry, we are committed to providing our patients with the care and support they need. If you are scheduled to have this procedure and have any questions, please contact our staff to see if porcelain veneers are right for you. We are proud to provide one of a kind personalized care that is tailored to your unique needs.

Porcelain Veneer Procedure Expectations

The process for getting porcelain veneers usually only takes a few dental appointments. At your first consultation, your dentist or hygienist will take photographs and digital x-rays that create a distinct blueprint of your teeth and mouth. This will also be your opportunity to discuss any specific aesthetic requests you have with how the finished product will look.

Once you have selected the style you are most comfortable with, your follow up appointment will occur within a week or two. At this appointment, your dentist will gently prepare your teeth by creating space for the thin porcelain that is going to be placed. Although this is generally a painless process, your dentist may offer anesthesia if you are anxious or uncomfortable.

Next, an impression of your teeth will be made that is designed to your preferred shape and the most appropriate shade for the veneer. Following this, your veneers will be made in a lab and be prepared to be bonded.

At your final appointment, our staff will confirm that shape and color of the veneers are to your liking, after which we will prepare your teeth by performing a general cleaning, polishing, and etching. Once this is completed, a bonding cement will be placed to cure.

Once this has cured, you will be free to go with a bright new smile!

The Benefits of Choosing Porcelain Veneers

Although there are many benefits to having porcelain veneers, there are several important things to keep in mind when considering whether this procedure is right for you. One of the most important things to be aware of is that porcelain veneers can be expensive. You should also keep in mind that having this procedure can result in increased tooth sensitivity, although this usually goes away after a few days. Finally, this procedure is permanent, so it is important that you have selected a color and shape of veneer that you are satisfied with.

Although these are important considerations, the benefits of porcelain veneers are substantial. For starters, this procedure will have a dramatic impact on cosmetic issues that have potentially been making you feel insecure. Additionally, this procedure will whiten your smile for a long time. Along with all of these aesthetic benefits, your veneers will also replace damaged enamel, which cannot grow back after it is lost.

Choosing Between Porcelain Veneers and Dental Crowns

When trying to decide if porcelain veneers or dental crowns is the right option for you, it is important to understand the differences between these approaches. Porcelain veneers are used mostly for cosmetic purposes, whereas dental crowns are primarily used for patients who want to restore appearance as well as improve overall functionality.

Be sure you take the time to discuss these different options of treatment with your dentist to determine which procedure is the best fit for you and your dental needs.

Caring for Your Veneers

Although dramatic changes to your diet and/or eating habits will not be necessary to properly maintain your porcelain veneers, it is important to try to avoid chewing on hard substances after your procedure. Aside from that, there are no specific restrictions to follow to maintain your porcelain veneers, though it is important to continue treating your veneers as you would your natural teeth. Be sure that you maintain good dental hygienic practices by brushing and flossing at least twice daily and that you continue to schedule your regular dental appointments.

Remember: the better you take care of your teeth, the better your teeth will take care of you!

Associated Costs

As is the case with most dental procedures, what and how much of your procedure will be covered will ultimately be determined by your specific insurance plan. If you are not currently covered by an insurance plan, or if you have any questions about payment options, please contact our staff who will be happy to discuss your options with you.
