Restorative Dental Fillings

Providing a Lifetime of Dentistry that Cares

What Are Dental Fillings?

Dental fillings are a treatment option used in order to restore the function and overall appearance of a damaged or decayed tooth. If your dentist has determined that you are in need of a restoration , they will begin by removing the decayed tooth material. Once this material has been removed, they will begin cleaning out the area that has been affected. Finally, they will fill the area with a composite restoration.

At Brook West Family Dentistry, we are committed to providing our patients with the care and support they need. If you think you may need to have a dental filling and would like to schedule an appointment, or if you have any questions, please contact our knowledgeable staff, who will be happy to answer any of your questions. We are proud to provide one-of-a-kind personalized care that is tailored to your unique needs.

Candidates for Fillings

The only way to truly know if you need a filling is to schedule an appointment with your dentist. During this checkup, your dentist will use a small mirror to examine the surface of each tooth. If they notice any abnormalities, they will take a closer inspection using specialized instruments. If necessary, they may also take an X-ray of your mouth or a particular section that may need attention. Once they have compiled this information, they will suggest a proper treatment to address the decay.

Caring for Your Filling

Be sure that you maintain good dental hygienic practices by brushing and flossing at least twice daily and continue scheduling your dentist appointments every six months. These checkups are especially important because they will give your dentist the opportunity to monitor the health of your teeth and potentially warn you of developing decay.

Remember: the better you take care of your teeth, the better your teeth will take care of you!

Types of Fillings Available

Because every patient has different needs, there is no one perfect filling for every patient. The proper filling for you will be determined by factors such as whether or not you have allergies to any of the materials, where the filling needs to be placed take place, and the extent of the repair required, or the cost of the procedure. Still, there are helpful things to know about each type of material when considering which options is best for you.

  • Composite (plastic) resins: One of the biggest benefits to this type of filling is that they it can match the color of your natural teeth, which makes it difficult to tell that any work has been done. Another benefit is that because the resin is bonded to the tooth, more natural tooth structure can be preserved.
  • Porcelain inlays or onlays fillings: These type of fillings, which are called inlays or onlays, come with the benefit of matching the color of your natural tooth and being resistant to permanent staining.
  • Gold inlays or onlays fillings: One of the biggest benefits to gold inlays is that gum tissues tend to tolerate them better and because they last a long time. Because of their longevity and natural interaction with gum tissues, this is considered by many to be the optimal restorative filling material.
